PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPEMENT

So what is professional development?

According to Melissa Malec in her article on learnerbly.com, "Professional development is the act of taking steps to get ahead in your career. This could involve learning practical skills to help you perform better or becoming active in your industry through networking and attending events." (2022)

Today marked the beginning of my journey in this module. As a freelance voiceover artist for the past 13 years, I have frequently handled record-keeping for tax purposes. I am now aware that registration will soon transition from an annual requirement to a quarterly one. While I possess a fair amount of knowledge regarding professional development, I recognise that there is always more to learn; for me, pursuing professional development is an ongoing endeavour. At 57, I remain dedicated to learning and growth.

My professional development has evolved through various stages. I gained experience in engraving at two sign companies and a jeweller's, ultimately earning my Master Craftsman certificate in Engraving. Additionally, I have hand-painted ceramic figurines, obtained a City and Guilds qualification in Signwriting, completed a remote web design course, from which I earned a diploma, and I've passed a marketing course.

I've also won industry awards for my freelance voiceover business.

I will leave this here and will expand on it in further weeks. Hope you have enjoyed this first blog post for professional development, and I'll be back next week.

Animation Show Reel:

Creativity has been a part of my life from a young age, particularly in music and art. At 15, I experimented with pen and ink drawing, and I drew Gilnockie Tower, the Armstrong settlement, which is now home to the Clan Armstrong Centre in Canonbie, Dumfries & Galloway. I gifted this drawing to Edward C. Armstrong MBE, the town clerk of Langhom at that time, who graciously sent me a heartfelt letter expressing his gratitude, a keepsake I cherish even after all these years. On a side note, Edward was largely instrumental in getting astronaut Neil Armstrong to come to Langholm in 1972 to receive the freedom of the burgh. (rotary-ribi.org)
